The Dukan Diet

A low-carbohydrate diet, the Dukan diet is a fad diet that is based on the book “The Dukan Diet” which was written by Pierre Dukan. 

With an emphasis on low-calorie intake and small meal portions, the diet is one that has recently undergone quite a bit of scrutiny as it is believed to carry cardiovascular and kidney-related risks. 

A Study Of Obesity 

The Dukan Diet became popular after Pierre Dukan published his book, “The Dukan Diet”. He was a doctor in Paris in 1975 when he was first confronted with obesity. He believed that there were many ways to help patients lose weight and prevent them from gaining it back, and outlined it in his book which was published in 2000

The diet grew in popularity after the publishing of the book, which has sold over 7 million copies around the world and has been published in 32 different countries. However, the diet has recently started to halt in popularity grown after Dukan was banned from practicing as a general practitioner in France for breaching medical ethics codes. 

Further, research done into the effectiveness of the diet has since proved that it can actually be harmful to the cardiovascular and kidney systems of the body. 

The Phases Of The Dukan Diet 

There are four phases that need to be adhered to. 

In the attack phase, high-protein foods are the focus. These include things like lean beef, venison, liver, kidney, fish, and shellfish. 

Next comes the cruise phase. This includes the above foods, as well as vegetables such as bell peppers, spinach, kale, and other leafy greens. 

The third is the consolidation phase. Dieters can mix and match foods from the above two phases, and can also eat things like cheese, bread, fruit, and various starches. 

Finally, the stabilization phase is all about maintaining the achievements of the earlier three phases. This is typically seen as a “framework” for planning future meals and incorporates a variety of foods from all three phases.

The diet is easily modified, with the ability to mix and match different foods to one’s preferences and goals. As noted, the stabilization phase is all about returning back to “normal” eating with no off-limit foods but is all about maintaining the improvements of the diet. 

This is the stage of the diet in which there can be the most variation. 

A Lesser-Known Diet 

Because of the controversy surrounding the creator of the Dukan diet, the diet itself hasn’t necessarily been as popular as other fad diets. However, it has been recently in the news as it was revealed that Kate Middleton used the diet to lose the baby weight from her three children. 

Further, the diet is still being experimented with in fitness communities, and a variety of dietary researchers are continuing to evaluate the effectiveness of the diet. 

A Lack Of Nutritional Requirements 

Something to be aware of when it comes to the Dukan diet is that it has been found to be of little nutritional value, and doesn’t meet basic requirements as outlined by nutritionists and doctors today. 

A Royal Diet 

As noted, Kate Middleton is a proponent of the Dukan diet, claiming to have used it to lose the baby weight gained after each of her three children. The Duchess of Cambridge uses the diet in addition to a regular exercise regiment. 

A Lingering Diet

Though most of the popularity surrounding the Dukan diet has disappeared in recent years, it’s still certainly a frequently used diet for fast weight loss!
