The Sonoma Diet

The Sonoma diet is similar to the Mediterranean diet in that it focuses on Mediterranean ways of living and eating, particularly with “power foods” such as olive oil, fish, vegetables, and poultry. 

Designed to have lasting effects on weight loss and keeping weight off, the diet came into the public eye in the mid-2000s and though it hasn’t scaled to as much popularity as the Mediterranean diet, it is still considered a fairly popular and general effective diet. 

A Type Of Mediterranean Diet

Also known as the New Sonoma Diet, this fad diet was created by Connie Guttersen as a variation on the Mediterranean diet. Guttersen’s weight loss plan was designed to combine the eating of the Sonoma Valley and Mediterranean regions, citing flavor as an important part of the weight loss program. 

Published in 2005, Guttersen’s book “The Sonoma Diet: Trimmer Waist, Better Health in Just 10 Days!” outlined the premise of the food and flavor-based diet, focusing on powerful foods that can help with portion control and overall healthy eating. 

A Three-Wave Diet 

The Sonoma diet is broken up into three “waves’. Wave one is the most intense phase and lasts 10 days. 

During this phase, portion sizes are quite small and followers can only eat a set number of foods, such as lean proteins and low-starch vegetables. 

After this 10-day period, followers start to move towards their ideal weight by slowly reintroducing other foods, such as low-fat dairy products and grains in moderation. 

The third wave is designed to keep the weight off while still eating lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and low-starch vegetables, as well as olive oil, beans, and nuts. 

The diet isn’t the easiest to modify during the first two phases, but by wave three, users can reintroduce fruit, minimal saturated fats, and minimal alcohol if they would like too. 

In The Shadow Of The Mediterranean Diet

Though recent research has shown the benefits of the Sonoma diet for weight loss and for overall health, it has unfortunately not been covered very much in news outlets because of its close relation to the Mediterranean diet. 

Due to the popularity of the Mediterranean diet, the Sonoma diet often gets wrapped up as a variation of this diet. That being said, as more people look for accessible ways to approach the Mediterranean diet they have been learning about the potential benefits of the Sonoma Diet. 

A Limiting Diet

If you’re the kind of person who likes to have a wide range of foods to choose from, the Sonoma diet may not be for you. Something to know before you start the diet is that it forbids many foods and even limits your vegetable intake. 

A Celebrity Secret

Though most news about the Sonoma diet ends up getting wrapped up in the Mediterranean diet, celebrities like Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston have tried the diet after looking for ways to modify the Mediterranean diet. 

Though the diet isn’t quite as popular as its Mediterranean counterpart just yet, it’s clear that it is making its way through Hollywood!

A Diet Of Many Origins

The Sonoma diet is unique in that it combines the foods and cultures of Northern California with the Mediterranean region. Though potentially difficult to adhere to due to how restrictive it can be, the Sonoma diet is one that can help individuals lose weight in the short term.
