The Zone diet is a popular diet that encourages people to eat carbs, fat, and protein with each meal in order to reduce the amount of inflammation in the body. 

Following a stricken ration of 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat, the zone diet has been around for over 30 years. Though it isn’t necessarily the most popular diet today, it remains common in fitness communities throughout the United States. 

A Diet Of The Late 20th Century 

The Zone diet was created by Dr. Barry Sears in the late 1980s and early 1990s. By 1995, the American biochemist had published his best-seller “The Zone”, which detailed the diet and the ways in which it could help users lose weight and stay healthy. The Zone diet was designed to reduce inflammation in the body. 

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the diet was incredibly popular. However, it has started to dwindle in popularity in more recent years as people turn to more lifestyle change-based diets and fewer fad diets. 

A Size-Based Diet 

The Zone diet typically prescribes 1,500 calories per day for men and 1,200 calories per day for women. Each meal eaten during the Zone diet should be 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. 

Meals need to be eaten five times a day, with two snacks and three larger meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 

The key to the zone diet is that you’re not supposed to have larger portions of food than what can fit in the palm of your hand. 

Then, your plate must be divided up into thirds, with one-third being lean protein, two-thirds being cards, and a little bit of fat being put on the plate in the form of things like avocado or almonds. 

The diet is highly specific, so users may find it quite difficult to modify it in any way. However, it can be changed up depending on your food preferences or if you have any specific allergies; the foods you do choose to eat will still have to fit the one-third and two-thirds portion sizing, though. 

A Fad Diet

The Zone diet is considered a fad diet, as it was popular in the early 2000s but has recently lost popularity. However, it is still practiced by some individuals. Most of the news surrounding the diet is typically in reference to the short history of similar fad diets, such as the Atkins and South Beach diets. 

Things To Know 

Researchers have pointed out that the Zone diet doesn’t put enough focus on sources of fiber and carbohydrates, which are known to heed healthy gut bacteria. Further, vegetarian diets or other meat restrictions would make it difficult to follow the diet, so if you are someone who doesn’t or can’t eat meat, the diet may be hard to sustain. 

Gaining In Popularity

Many celebrities, including Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston, Madonna, and Demi Moore, have tried the Zone diet – and have shared positive results with fans and media alike. The diet has been sweeping Hollywood since at least 2009, and continues to have a stronghold with a variety of celebs!

An Intricate Diet 

The Zone diet may produce some solid results in the short-term but is considered one that is difficult to follow long term for most people. However, the methods of calorie restriction used in the diet are ones that can certainly have weight loss benefits!
