The Volumetrics diet is designed to promote healthy living, long-term weight loss, and the consumption of energy-dense foods for an entire lifestyle change. 

This diet is one that involves foods that have high water content, such as fruits and veggies. These foods can be eaten as much as an individual likes in order to eliminate feelings of hunger, but are ones that actively support weight loss. 

Developed To Maintain Weight Loss 

The Volumetrics diet was created by Dr. Barbara Rolls, an obesity and nutrition researcher at Penn State University. The volumetrics diet was based on her research and was published in both “The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet” (1999) and “The Volumetrics Eating Plan” (2005). 

This recent diet is one that has slowly become popular with nutrition-focused communities over the last two decades. While it is not necessarily as popular as other low-calorie density diets, it’s one that is currently being researched as a potential way to encourage life-long healthy eating habits. 

A Low-Calorie Concept 

Intended to be a complete lifestyle change that will help with long-term weight, most foods that are highly encouraged through the program include: 

  • Lean protein 
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Whole grains
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables

The diet divides food up into four groups, depending on their calorie density. Foods in category one are low in calorie density, such as veggies and fruits, and it is recommended that you eat lots of them. 

Foods in category two are grains, legumes, and low-fat meats. 

In category three are things to eat in moderation, such as bread and ice cream. 

Finally, foods in category four are things like crackers, candy, and cookies. These can be eaten occasionally, but aren’t to be included in daily meals. 

The diet is therefore highly variable, depending on the eating habits and weight loss goals that a follower may already have. There are plenty of ways to mix and match foods from all four categories to get a well-rounded diet that can still support weight loss. 

A Diet Plan That Is Growing In Popularity 

Most of the news coming out today about the Volumetrics diet is really about how to eat more while still losing weight. Studies done in the last two years have revealed that this high-fiber and high-water content eating plan really does fill you up faster, allowing you to feel full without eating high-calorie foods. 

A Diet With Heavy Meal Prep 

One thing to be aware of before diving into the Volumetrics diet is that it typically requires quite a bit of meal planning and prepping in order to properly follow the diet. 

Everything from breakfast to dinner – and every little snack in between – must be properly planned out so that you’re eating enough high-density foods to avoid feeling hungry throughout the day.

Because the Volumetrics diet is so new and is still growing in the early stages of its popularity, there aren’t any known celebrities who follow the diet. However, it’s likely that with the continued positive press around the diet Hollywood will soon start taking a look at just what makes the Volumetrics diet so successful.
