Neon leotards. Leg warmers. Big hair. Jane Fonda. 

These are a few things that generally come to mind when people hear the word “aerobics”. Back in the 1980s, the Aerobic Exercise fad hit hard, encouraging men and women to get up and bounce their way to better health to the beat of the synthesizer. It was an old way of exercising disguised as an exotic exercise fad. Today we call this kind of exercise mild cardio. 

Aerobic Exercise is a light activity that you can sustain over a long period of time. Aerobic just means that your body is able to keep up with the oxygen demands of the exercise. The focus of Aerobic Exercise is to improve cardiovascular health and to increase endurance, as opposed to building muscle mass or increasing flexibility. 

Ways to Get Aerobic

There are so many ways to get aerobic with your exercise. What’s great about this foundational form of fitness is that you can do whatever kind of Aerobic Exercise that you want, fit it to your needs and your tastes. Though the dance type of Aerobics became popularized along with the term, it’s hardly the only method to doing this kind of exercise. 

Here are a few examples of Aerobic Exercises.

  • Jogging
  • Fast walking
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Dancing
  • Jumping rope
  • Elliptical machine

Within each of these sets are even more subsets of exercise that can get your heart going while you’re still breathing. You can do Aerobic Exercise in a group setting or on your own, whatever feels right. Organized sports like soccer, tennis, or flag football are great options as well for Aerobic Exercise. There are also lots of classes, think Zumba or Jazzercise, that cater to the Aerobic style workout but give you something fun to do while increasing that cardio stamina!

Efficient Oxygen Action

Essentially, Aerobic exercise is making your body more efficient at delivering oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Every beat of your heart is better than the one before when you do Aerobic exercise. During these exercises, the lungs are adapting, taking in more oxygen. The muscles are changing too, becoming better at using the new levels of oxygen that they’re getting.

When you’re doing Aerobic exercises, you’re working hard enough that your heart rate and breathing are increasing, but not so hard that you have to stop and take a rest. That’s the sweet spot for this kind of exercise, the kind that will increase your ability to keep going.

Doing Aerobic Exercise regularly is key to making the heart healthy. The heart is a muscle, and just like other muscles it needs a workout to stay strong and toned. The benefits for heart health are major, and they’ll show up in places other than the scale or with the tape measure. Aerobic Exercise is helpful in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart attacks. It’s also a booster for the immune system, and it lowers both blood pressure and cholesterol. This is a fitness activity that is about all over health. 

Regular Aerobic Exercise is good for holistic health, and what’s more it can be fun! It’s an easy remedy for a whole host of health issues that affect many of us.
