The workout is great if you want a heavy-hitting, full-body routine. Vertical climbers use both arm and leg motion to work the arms, back, core, hamstrings, glutes, quads, and calves!

A Relatively New Machine 

The vertical climber machine was invented in 1995 by Richard D. Charnitski. Since then, the machine has skyrocketed in popularity around the world as a piece of equipment that can be simultaneously used to work the upper and lower body. 

For the last two decades, exercise aficionados have found that using the machine isn’t just great for building and toning muscle, but it’s also a solid way to get the heart pumping. 

This cardio-friendly machine has become known as an “all-in-one” device that can in some cases eliminate the need for workouts with several steps and various types of equipment. 

How Vertical Climbing Is Done 

The motion of vertical climbing is very much like that of real climbing. Imagine scaling a mountain, and moving your arms and legs at the same time to do so. 

This is very much the basis of the vertical climbing machine. The exercise is achieved by putting your feet on the pedals and holding the handles at the top of the machine. Then, you simply move your arms and legs, lifting one side of the body at a time. 

This piece of equipment can be found in the gym or purchased for at-home use. 

Relation To Other Exercises

As the exercise is relatively new, there hasn’t been all that much in the way of evolution to the way it’s done. However, if you’re familiar with the exercise “mountain climbers”, you may recognize a similar climbing motion being implemented. 

The same idea can also be found in climbing stairs. Both great for lower-body and cardio work, climbing stairs is often thought of as a great exercise. The vertical climber builds on this by including the motion of stair climbing with an upper-body workout as well. 

Where To Find Vertical Climbers

If you’re looking to see vertical climbers in action, then head on down to your local gym or fitness center. They should have some of these machines on hand, and you may even get to see the workout being done. 

Though the machine and technique are still considered to be relatively new, it has caught on quite quickly and is often used by exercisers of all ages.

To dive into some vertical climbing on your own, visit your gym and speak with a trainer. They will be able to help get you positioned on the machine and can answer any questions you may have about the number of repetitions or length of time on the machine.
